Next, my analysis into common LED bulbs reveals a few fundamental drawbacks to their design. Many, if not most, LED lamps that are not greater finish priced have a quite simple Rectifier / Voltage Regulator circuit. All this is fine with the exception of two essential issues. 1) Line spikes. In areas the place the source is poorly regulated or is subject to lightening strikes can really devastate these designs. The opposite approach is using an active SMPS device to manage the voltage. Managing heat is an issue in this case. I've several that have failed ( some within just a few weeks ) because of excessive heat buildup AND a lack of internal ventilation. 2) Atmosphere ( ie, heat ). If the bulb is positioned in an overhead fixture the place heat is not allowed to escape, its destruction is assured. One other is outdoors. The bulb would not have to be utterly sealed whether it is in a protected area. Even in a desk or bedside lamp, heat will kill many of those designs. Principally, in my view, it is because there isn't any ventilation of the interior electronics. I do not know what sort of electronics these contain, however I am impressed sufficient to purchase a number of more and continue the examination. Another benefit of LED's in general is low temp environments. Florescents have a problem with working in low temperatures ( even in Houston ). LEDs deal with the flickering and low output that a chilly surroundings brings.
