Latin memoria 'Memory Wave System, remembrance') is any nonfiction narrative writing based mostly on the writer's private memories. The assertions made within the work are thus understood to be factual. While memoir has historically been defined as a subcategory of biography or autobiography for the reason that late 20th century, the style is differentiated in type, presenting a narrowed focus, usually a specific time section in someone's life or profession. A biography or autobiography tells the story "of a life", while a memoir often tells the story of a particular career, occasion, or time, equivalent to touchstone moments and turning factors within the writer's life. The author of a memoir could also be referred to as a memoirist or a memorialist. Memoirs have been written since the historic occasions, as shown by Julius Caesar's Commentarii de Bello Gallico, also referred to as Commentaries on the Gallic Wars. Within the work, Caesar describes the battles that befell through the nine years that he spent combating native armies within the Gallic Wars.
